We Belong to Everything

by Pearl Thornton

We Belong to Everything

We belong to everything,
The petals of this flower
The warmth of the morning sun on my cheek
The sparkle of the evening star.
The droop of the weeping willow,
The reflections in the stream
Our thoughts and hopes and longings,
And every passing dream.

We belong to everything,
That lone bird in the sky,
This tiny shrew scuttling through the leaves,
On my hand, this butterfly.
The waves of the sea lapping on the shore,
The dew glistening on the grass
The smell of the earth behind the plough,
Do we notice them as we pass?

We belong to everything,
The past, the present, tomorrow,
The link with the Light and reality,
The joy, also the sorrow.
To the Invisible World above
The dimensions from which we came
To which, one day, we will return
Then perhaps, to come again.

We belong to everyone
Our parents, our children, our friend,
Our neighbour, the stranger at the gate
And God within me without end…
